Welcome, Harriett!

Following two concurrent nation-wide, months-long, and cross-departmental efforts to find both Associate Dean and Vice Dean for University Libraries Administration, Harriett Green accepted the Vice Dean position, and started in August after relocating from St. Louis, Missouri.

Background & experience

After she earned an MS in Library Information and Science (MSLIS) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Green was hired onto the faculty at the University of Illinois Library as English and Digital Humanities Librarian. She later became the department head for Scholarly Communications and Publishing.

In 2018 Green became the Associate University Librarian for Digital Scholarship and Technology Services at Washington University in St. Louis ("WashU") where served until this past July. She led a division of four departments in building out the WashU Libraries technology infrastructure and related services.

Green has been active in multiple scholarly and professional organizations including SPARC, the Association of College & Research LibrariesModern Language Association, Digital Library FoundationAssociation for Computers and the HumanitiesSamvera PartnersEDUCAUSE, and the Coalition for Networked Information.

Before entering the library world, Green worked in academic publishing and was a book publicist at the University of Chicago Press for five years – "home of the big orange Chicago Manual of Style," she said. "Feel free to quiz me on obscure citation formatting."

Current role

As Vice Dean, Green oversees day-to-day library operations in close collaboration with Dean Shan Sutton, library administrators, and department heads, and she serves as lead administrator in the absence of the Dean. Departments and staff who report directly to Green include Technology Strategy & Services, Special Collections, User Experience, Analytics & Assessment, and Access & Information Services, and the Assessment & Analytics Librarian. Green also serves as administrative liaison to the Library Faculty Assembly and is executive sponsor of several committees and initiatives.

"I'm looking forward to the diversity of work and research across our departments," Green said. "This will ensure we advance our Strategic Plan, and continue to grow as an essential anchor of information access and student success. The Libraries has already accomplished so many impressive initiatives, services, and partnerships, and it's exciting to be a part of this endeavor!"

During her time off, Green enjoys cooking, knitting and crocheting, dancing, hiking, and traveling. "I have been to all continents except two," she said. "I also love seeing the performing arts and music so I definitely plan to check out all concert and performance venues in Tucson and the surrounding area."

As a new transplant to Tucson, Green was surprised by the grandeur of the southwest's thunderstorms and monsoon season. "I certainly anticipated the desert heat, but the storms are quite impressive as well!"
