Historical background

This collection was donated by Erin Russ and contains information on the Southern Arizona Gender Alliance (SAGA). SAGA is a nonprofit oganization in Tucson that was born out of a Wingspan meeting in 1998. SAGA's work is to create support and justice for trans and gender non conforming individuals in Southern Arizona. This collection specifically focuses on Tucson's Trans Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance, which is annually commemorated on November 20th. Transgender Day of Rememberance honors transgender individuals who have been murdered, and began to honor the memory of trans woman, Rita Hester who was stabbed to death in her Boston apartment in 1998.
