Collection area: Borderlands

Collection dates: 1793-1794

About this collection

Photocopy of typed transcription of a letter report that Francisco Antonio Barbastro wrote to the Viceroy Count de Revillagigedo, from the Aconchi Mission, and completed on December 1, 1793. It was apparently sent first to his guardian superior at the Querétaro College, Father Juan Francisco Rivera, because Rivera added his addendum to the Viceroy, dated January 21, 1794. Barbastro's 48-page report first discusses conditions in Sonora: the geography, the missions and towns, the temporal state, the spiritual state, and Indian industries. The most substantial section follows and concerns the secularization of the missions.

Historical background

Franciscan priest; served at Tubutama and various other missions; and was the Father President of the Sonoran missions, 1781- 1783. Known for his 1788 Compendio, a history of the Sonoran mission activities of the Querétaro Franciscans.
