Historical background

The Arizona Bureau of Mines, now the Arizona Geological Survey, was founded in 1883 by the Arizona legislature as the Office of the Territorial Geologist. Since its founding, the Arizona Geological Survey has been several Territorial and State Geologic Agencies, including the Arizona Bureau of Mines from 1915 to 1977. In 1893, the University of Arizona acquired the role of geologic mapping and reporting and still maintains this mission with the Arizona Geological Survey.
