The Ada M. Slatter Burlingham correspondence includes 131 letters she sent home while serving in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Her correspondence dates from 1944-1945 and discusses her time serving in the European Theater of Operations, mainly in France and Germany. In addition to describing daily life during the war, her letters detail her experience as a member of the 116th Evacuation Hospital and discuss her time working at Dachau Concentration Camp shortly after the liberation.
Ada Mary Burlingham was born Ada Mary Slatter in Mayfield Heights, Ohio on January 1, 1922. She served in the Army Nurse Corps from June 1, 1944 to February 2nd, 1946, reaching the rank of first lieutenant. She served in the European Theater of World War II, working mainly in France and Germany. She was a member of the 116th Evacuation Hospital supporting the 7th army, and she served at Dachau Concentration Camp shortly after it was liberated. She was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal as well as the World War II Victory Medal. After returning to the United States, she was employed by National Acme for 20 years. She died March 2, 1997.
