Celebrating APIDA Heritage Month in April

March 31, 2023

Since 1990, the U.S. has celebrated the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout May. The month was chosen to commemorate two key dates: May 7, 1843 – when the first Japanese immigrated to the U.S., and May 10, 1869 – the completion of the transcontinental railroad; most of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

The University of Arizona, like many other universities, honors Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month in April while most students are still on campus, as spring semester ends around mid-May.

Our commitment to diversity & inclusivity

We established the University Libraries Diversity, Social Justice and Equity Council (DSJEC) to develop a sustainable and holistic approach to advancing diversity and inclusion for the Libraries through internal programming and assessment. DSJEC also provides advisement to leadership, and campus and community outreach.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusivity includes cross-promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) campus events – sponsored by and coordinated by – many different colleges, departments, groups, and DEI committees.
