MS 838

Collection dates: 1929 to 1930

About this collection

This collection comprises four 16mm acetate home movies of the Dougherty family of Tubac, Arizona taken from 1929 to 1930. Subject matter includes Southern Arizona ranch life, Christmas holiday celebrations, road trips to California and the Grand Canyon.

Historical background

The Dougherty family, Francis Marion and Cora Penelope nee Alexander, and children William Holmes and Samuel Alexander, lived at Baca Float Ranch situated near Tubac, Arizona on the storied Baca Float 3 parcel of land in the 1920s.

These home movies taken from 1929 to 1930 document everyday life and leisure activities, including road trips and holiday celebrations, for the Dougherty family.

It is unclear if the Doughertys lived at what is now known as Rancho Santa Cruz, which served as the headquarters of Baca Float Ranch. The ranch was owned by Francis Dougherty and Talbot "Tol" Pendleton in the 1920s and '30s. In the mid-1930s, Rancho Santa Cruz would be sold, becoming a guest ranch to the rich and famous.
