The collection's photographs are mainly related to Arizona, the Southwest, and U.S. Borderlands region, and documents Tucson history, and exploratory expiditions to the West in 1884-1885 and 1885-1886. It also includes photos of Native American groups of the American Southwest and Mexico.

The photograph subject files were created and added to by Special Collections staff members, over the years, from donations, in order to provide subject access to these photographs within University Libraries Special Collections holdings.
