Speaker: Albrecht Classen
The Book of Kells is one of the oldest illustrated Irish bibles and at the same time one of the most spectacular medieval illustrated manuscripts. The stunning images, marginal drawings, initials and many other features make this book a bibliophile masterpiece of extraordinary quality, reflecting stunningly on the enormous cultural, artistic and economic strength and spiritual power of the early Irish Christian monks who were later to spawn Christianity on the European continent.
Dr. Albrecht Classen is University Distinguished Professor of German Studies, focusing on the Middle Ages and the early modern age in his close to 100 scholarly books and ca. 650 articles. He is the editor of the journals Mediaevistik and Humanities Open Access.
