When
Despite a historical rivalry that made Yavapai and O'odham unlikely allies, Wassaja Carlos Montezuma (1866-1923), the first Native American medical doctor, bridged a cultural and historical gap in order to bring Indigenous communities together in common cause.
Fighting the Indian Bureau, corporations, and racial prejudice, Montezuma successfully employed his considerable intellectual powers to protect Indigenous land and water rights. The archival materials hold the documentation of this heroic feat, and the collection is now open to the public.
Join us to celebrate the acquisition of the Leon Summit on Carlos Montezuma Collection in the University of Arizona Libraries Special Collections with a presentation by author and professor David Martínez.
