Instructor Maker Bootcamp with CATalyst Studios: 3D Printing

These six workshops introduce how UA faculty and instructors can partner with librarians at CATalyst Studios to incorporate hands-on learning and maker-based literacies into your courses. Each workshop highlights a specific tool or craft available at CATalyst Studios, including examples of existing instructor collaborations, best practices, and hands-on training or certification.

You are not required to attend all six workshops; feel free to register for whichever workshops interest you.  

Most workshops have technology requirements. Please review the notes so you can arrive prepared.

Workshop Schedule

Friday, Sept. 26: 3D Printing

  • An introduction to the applications for 3D design and 3D printing, followed by a 3D printing certification.
  • Note: This workshop requires a laptop.
  • Registration is required.

Friday, Oct. 10: Laser Cutting & Engraving

  • Discover how classes use laser engraving to explore history, art, and culture, then get your certification in laser cutting.
  • Note: This workshop requires a laptop and will use Adobe Illustrator. Request an Adobe Creative Cloud & Stock license and install Illustrator before the workshop.
  • Registration is required.

Friday, Oct. 24: Vinyl Cutting & Sticker Printing

  • Explore how courses use the vinyl cutters at CATalyst to create stickers and silkscreen stencils, then create customized stickers.
  • Note: This workshop requires a laptop and will use Adobe Illustrator. Request an Adobe Creative Cloud & Stock license and install Illustrator before the workshop.
  • Registration is required.

Friday, Nov. 7: Podcasting & Music Production

  • Discuss how podcasting and audio recording can enrich research outputs and learn how to use the podcasting station at CATalyst Studios.
  • Note: This workshop requires a laptop.
  • Registration is required.

Friday, Nov. 21: Zines, Scrap Art & Collage

  • Learn how classes use zines and other design projects as alternatives for, or a supplement to, written assignments. Includes the opportunity to make a zine, a found object artwork, and a collage.
  • Note: Basic supplies will be provided. You’re welcome to bring your own photos, magazines, and other materials if you’d like to.
  • Registration is required.

Friday, Dec. 5: Virtual Reality, Volumetric Scanning, & 360° Cameras

  • Hear how instructors are making use of VR, volumetric scanning, and 360° cameras to enhance courses, and learn how to use this extended reality (XR) equipment.
  • Note: This workshop requires a laptop for the volumetric scanning activity, as well as a cell phone or tablet to use the 360° cameras.
  • Registration is required.
