Historical background

The Steward Observatory, established in 1916, is the research division of the Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona. The observatory began to receive visitors in 1923, when the first building and telescope were installed. In addition to the observational and theoretical research conducted by astronomers, the scientists at the Steward Observatory also continue to play a critical role in significant space astronomy missions, such as the Hubble Space Telescope.
