Southwest Folklore Center compact disk collection
Collection area: Arizona and Southwest
Collection dates: 1992-1997
Commercially produced compact disk recordings of gospel music, country and western music, Native American music, Mexican American music, corridos and cowboy songs. The collection includes several compact disks recorded by Lalo Guerrero. This collection is part of the Southwest Folklore Center collection. The Southwest Folklore Center was founded in 1979 after the dissolution of the University of Arizona Folklore Committee and collected information about folk communities, arts, music, and other humanities-related materials. This collection was previously SWF 014. The materials were transferred to Special Collections in 2017.
Since its creation in 1979, the Southwest Folklore Center has served as an archive for folk material. Its activities include actively researching and collecting information about Arizona's folk communities, generating outreach programs, and coordinating folk activities throughout the state. The compact disks located in the Archives have been collected since the early 1990s, and are mostly commercial recordings of various musicians, poets, and musical groups from Mexico and the southwestern United States. Collection activity is ongoing.
