Historical background

An organizational meeting of what was to become Southern Arizona Biomedical Librarians (SABL) was held on September 30, 1981. According to the minutes of that meeting, twenty persons involved in providing biomedical information in Tucson and southern Arizona attended the meeting. Among those attendees were librarians and library technicians from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Hospital, Kino Community Hospital, Tucson Medical Center, Tucson Veterans Administration Medical Center and the University of Arizona’s Arizona Health Sciences Center Library. The first major business item was formation of a program committee. Two more meetings – each with a program – and a holiday potluck dinner were also held that first year.

Since 1981 SABL librarians have met regularly with each other to share knowledge, skills and ideas; to attend programs presented by SABL members, other librarians and other health professionals; to take continuing education courses; to jointly plan programs with other groups of medical librarians in Arizona; to participate in special programs such as mentoring UA library school students interested in health sciences librarianship; and to socialize with each other.
