About this collection

Approximately fifty black-and-white photographs, taken by Salaün in 1991 and 1995 of scenes along historic Route 66. Includes businesses, automobiles, unique signs and people mainly in Arizona and New Mexico.

Two images show Salaün; one posed with a juke box and another posed with wooden Indian statues. There are views from Kingman, Oatman, Seligman, and Holbrook, Arizona, and Gallup and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Highlights include a Kingman police car, London Bridge at Lake Havasu, street views in Oatman, the interior of a diner in New Mexico, and a view of Cadillac Ranch in Texas. The people photographed are mostly unidentified and include both eccentric and regular people.

Historical background

French photographer, lecturer and master printer, Philippe Salaün specializes in black-and-white portraits and travel scenes including series in Peru, Bolivia, Mali and Viet Nam, as well as these Historic Route 66 scenes.
