Collection area: Arizona and Southwest
Collection dates: circa 1890-1961 bulk (bulk 1920-1949)
Photographs and a photograph album of the Louis C. Bustamante family dating from the 1890s to 1961. The images include formal portraits and informal scenes of their family and friends. Most images are not identified but the album appears to belong to Louis Bustamante, Sr. and his wife, Mary, and the images were taken between the 1900s and 1920s. These include portraits, several posed in a studio on a crescent moon prop, wedding couples, one of U. S. Navy sailors on ship, men playing cards, and a large group of F. Ronstadt Company employees.
There are photographs of horse-drawn wagons and workers, the interior of a hardware store, a man with an infant in a backyard filled with a bed, bicycle and other items, and actors in a scene at a bar and an outdoor scene. Early photographs include one, taken in 1918, of three small girls, Carolina Codrioli, Dora Sloan, and Alexandria Diamos, posed with a goat pulling a small cart. There are also images, of Louis, Jr. on a pony, from about ages 3 to 8. Some picnic or party scenes include someone with a guitar, circa 1940s to 1950s.
Some downtown Tucson scenes include a "snapped on the street" image of a man walking downtown, people outside of businesses including the Palace Cafe, Tucson Ice and Cold Storage, and one that may be La Nopalera Studio. One series shows parade floats from about 1920 including a Tucson Rifle Club float, "patriot nurses" float, and a float with lots of flags. Rodeo parade scenes, circa 1930s, also show the White House Department store in the background.
Louis was born in Tucson, Arizona to Louis C. Bustamante, Sr. and Mary Rodriguez Bustamante in 1913. The elder Bustamante worked for the Ronstadt Hardware Company. Louis attended the University of Arizona and was a photographer for La Nopalera Studio beginning in 1935. He married Carole Codiroli about 1937 and they had four children: John, Fred, Carole, and Mary. He went to work for the Ronstadt Hardware Company about 1955 and later was purchasing agent for Pima County until his retirement in 1988. He died on July 18, 1995.
