About this collection

Photo album containing pictures of Jessie Esther Rae and her fellow students at the University of Arizona. This album was compiled by Jessie’s granddaughter, Margaret Rae Monthan, and the bulk of the photographs are from 1915 to 1919, with a few photos from up to 1921.

Historical background

Jessie Esther Rae, born August 23, 1896, was originally from Vail, Arizona. She graduated from Tucson High School in 1915, and went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Arizona in 1919. She was very involved on campus, with activities ranging from membership in the Beta Delta chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta to playing basketball and tennis. She served as Secretary for the Women’s Self Government for 1918-1919, as Secretary for the Junior Class for 1917-1918, and in the University’s House of Representatives in 1915, 1916, 1917, and 1919. She was a member of the Y.W.C.A, the Women’s League, and the Sock and Buskin Club, and she performed in several plays during her time at the University of Arizona.

Jessie married her husband, Guy Monthan, on August 2, 1919. Jessie Rae passed away September 10, 1984.
