About this collection

The collection consists of transcripts of interviews conducted by Betty Leavengood and some unidentified interviewers starting in 1971 to 1988. These interviews consist of people who lived or visited Faraway Ranch and what their time was like while there.

Historical background

Faraway Ranch is located at Bonita Canyon in the Chiricahua National Monument. It was the first home of Neil and Emma Erickson during the summer of 1888. It housed hunters and other guests who were passing through. Later it would be run by their daughter Lillian and her husband Ed Riggs as a guest and cattle ranch. Ed was instrumental in having the Wonderland of Rocks designated as a National Monument and later supervised the building of the trails in the Monument which he would later supervise. After Lillian and Ed passed the ranch would be purchased by the National Park service and then open to the public in August of 1988. This would lead to them hiring Betty Leavengood to gather and conduct interviews from people who lived, visited, and worked on the ranch.
