This collection is part of the Southwest Jewish Archives. The Bloom Southwest Jewish Archives were founded by David A. and Leona G. Bloom, longstanding members of Tucson’s business, religious, and social service communities. The Archive serves to highlight Jewish contributions to Tucson and surrounding southwest areas. This collection was previously SJA 001. The materials were transferred to Special Collections in 1998.
David A. Bloom (1917-2001) and his wife Leona G. Bloom (1913-1995) were active members of Tucson's business, religious, and social services communities for decades. The duo also served as amateur historians for Tucson's Jewish community, collecting records that would later make up a large part of the Bloom Southwest Jewish Archives collection.
David A. Bloom and his brothers (Herb and Ted) made up the sons of Dave Bloom & Sons, a Tucson retail men's clothing store founded in 1906 by his father, David W. Bloom (called Dave Bloom Mens' Store until 1936 and Dave Bloom and Sons thereafter). David W. Bloom came to Boston from Lithuania in 1894, and came to the Arizona Territory in 1869. The store initially opened Downtown at Congress and Sixth in 1931, yet later moved to the El Con Mall, and closed its doors in 1991 after 28-years of business in the Tucson community. The Blooms were known as having some of the best men's fashions in the southwest.
David A. Bloom has served as president of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society's Southern Arizona Chapter, president of the Tucson chapter of the University of Arizona's Alumni Association, and vice president of Temple Emanu-El. He was also a benefactor of the Bloom Southwest Jewish Archives.
Leona G. Bloom (1913-1995) was born in New York City, but she resided in Tucson for over 50 years. In addition to being a benefactor of the Bloom Southwest Jewish Archives, she was very active in community activities and service, including those of Temple Emanu-El, the International Friends, the Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (O.R.T.), Tucson literacy programs, the Tucson Zoological Society, and the Arizona Jewish Historical Society's Southern Arizona Chapter.
