About this collection

Photocopies of typed transcriptions of five letters written by Father Mariano Antonio de Buena y Alcalde, at the Tubutama Mission, 1768- 1769. They are written to the Guardian Father Sebastián Flores, and other unnamed officials, at the Querétaro College, the visitor general José de Gálvez, and the governor Juan Claudio de Pineda.

The sources were compiled by Father Kieran McCarty, a priest and scholar associated with the Academy of American Franciscan History, Washington, D.C.

Letters in Spanish; annotations in English.

Historical background

Mexican Franciscan priest selected in 1767 to be Father President of the 14 missionaries going from the Querétaro College north to the Sonoran province; served briefly at the San Pedro y San Pablo Mission at Tubutama in 1768; then moved to the San Miguel Mission at Ures.
