Historical background

Evan Mecham (1924-2008) was a businessman before he became the Governor of Arizona. He served as governor from 1987 until his impeachment on April 4, 1988. He was the first Arizona governor to be impeached. As governor, he worked to open trade with Taiwan (focusing on cotton exportation), drug abuse prevention programs, and raising the speed limit on rural highways from 55 mph to 65 mph. Grassroot movements to impeach Mecham began after negative remarks against people of color surfaced. However, he was impeached following a conviction on charges of obstruction of justice and misuse of government funds. Mecham passed away in 2008.
