About this collection

Records, 1974-1980, relating to Camera, Spade, and Pen. Contains chiefly correspondence between the editor, Marnie Gaede, and the contributing authors of the book, Camera, Spade, and Pen, published by The University of Arizona Press in 1980. Also included are drafts of chapters by each author.

The supplemental files in the second series relate to the production of the book, and include author releases, the final map of major archaeological sites in the Southwest, an introductory letter to the authors, and biographical perspective information about the book's contributors.

Historical background

In the early 1970s, the husband and wife team of Marc and Marnie Gaede conceived an idea for a book which would approach the subject of Southwestern archaeology in a fresh, new way. Combining their degrees in anthropology with Marc's talent as a photographer and Marnie's skills as a writer and editor, the Gaedes decided to focus the book around Marc's photographs of Southwestern archaeological sites and to include comments about those sites by prominent Southwestern archaeologists who had done field work at those locations.
