Albert Buehman oral histories
Collection area: Arizona and Southwest
Collection dates: May, 1965-August, 1965
The Albert Buehman oral histories is a collection of two CDs containing digitized sound recordings of interviews Albert Harry Buehman conducted with his father, Albert Rex Buehman, over a period spanning from May and August in 1965. The focus of these interviews were the history of the Buehman family and Albert Rex Buehman's experiences growing up at a ranch in Buehman Canyon that belonged to the family during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 1.16 GB of born-digital material found on compact discs are included in this series.
The Buehman Family are originally from Bremen in what was then the North German Confederation. Henry Buehman immigrated to the United States in 1868. After travelling throughout the western US, Henry settled in Tucson in 1874. There he began a successful photography business and eventually served as mayor from 1895 to 1899. His son, Albert Rex Buehman, continued the family's photography business and involvement in local politics, serving a single term in both houses of the Arizona legislature. Albert also attempted to run for other positions, including mayor of Tucson and a position on the Tucson school board, but was unsuccessful. In photography, Albert was known for his collaborations with Blackfoot artist Lone Wolf, as well as photographing John Dillinger's arrest, Charles Lindbergh's 1927 visit to Tucson, the scene of June Robles's kidnapping and the Mexican Revolution.
