About this collection

This collection conatins the personal and professional papers of artist and activist Jay Kyle Petersen. It includes biographical materials related to Petersen such as audio recording interviews as well as correspondence, education materials, materials related to his art and energy paintings such as exhibition information and publications. It also includes scores and arrangements for his catalog of music. This collection is part of the Arizona Queer Archives (AQA), a community focused archive through the Institute for LGBT Studies at the University of Arizona. It was transferred to Special Collections in 2022.

Historical background

Jay Kyle Petersen was born intersex in 1952 in Pipestone, Minnesota. He was raised on a farm and supported by his grandparents. He graduated with a Master's Degree in Social Work from Arizona State University in 2002 as well as Master's degrees in Philosophy/Religion, Music Education and a Bachelor's in Studio Art. He became sober in 1977 and began painting. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. He is also the author of A Comprehensive Guide To Intersex.
