A line drawing in green and brown tones of a young child and a cat walking together in the woods. The child holds a large book under their arm. A large green hand looms threateningly from the left over the unsuspecting pair. The brown soil in front of them reads ‘the Shortcut’ in rough white letters.

About this collection

The Alternative Press collection consists of small books in atypical formats, including zines, pulp fiction, comics, graphic novels, chapbooks, and miniature books primarily printed in the United States by small or independent publishers or self-published. Collection largely spans the 1990s to early 2000s.

The collection includes an advance reader's copy of the 2009 James Patterson YA novel, Wizards and Witches, that incorporated technologies and strategies for marketing new to the decade, including brand collaborations and digital media campaigns outlined in a press release that accompanies the ARC. Collection contains four issues of the Publick Occurrences zine series, created by Tucson artist and mural painter Danny Martin. Also present are two works by cartoonist Jordan Crane, working both under his own name and his nom de plume, Jane D'Rancor. Artists and illustrators Allison Cole and GB Tran are also represented. An example of an artist's book from Flockaphobic Press, Ltd. founded by Sandy Rower--grandson of sculptor Alexander Calder--is also included. Six examples of pulp fiction published by the DimeNovels, Inc. imprint, based in Portland, OR, are present. DimeNovels Inc. was the brainchild of Portland entrepeneur Randy Byrd who launched the books as pocket-sized, ephemeral fiction intended for purchase at grocery and convenience store checkout stands.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by title. Author, place and year of publication are noted when known.
