About this collection

The Poetics and Politics collection (1991-1992) contains records and audiovisual materials produced prior to and during a series of graduate seminars and public poetry readings. Organization records include correspondence, participant records, logistics, event proceedings, news clippings, reading logs, mailing lists, release forms, posters and flyers, and photographs. Video recordings consist of 91 videocassettes (VHS) and contain readings by Native American poets recorded in Spring 1992. Audio recordings consist of 27 audio cassettes and contain readings by Native American poets recorded in Spring 1992.

Historical background

Poetics and Politics was a graduate seminar and series of public readings by thriteen Native American writers. The events were held in the Spring of 1992 at the University of Arizona and were organized by Professor Ofelia Zepeda (Linguistics Department) and Professor Larry Evers (Department of English). Audio and video recordings from the events include readings by Joy Harjo, Roberta Hill Whiteman, Daniel Lopez, Nora Marks Dauenhauer, Leslie Marmon Silko, Felipe Molina, Nora Naranjo-Morse, Simon Ortiz, Greg Sarris, N. Scott Momaday, Luci Tapahanso, James Welch and Ofelia Zepeda.
