Reminiscences about Empire Ranch
Collection area: Arizona and Southwest
Collection dates: 1960
Typescript, from a tape recording, of Heffner's experiences as manager of the Empire Ranch, as told to Charles U. Pickrell, Tucson, Ariz., 1960. Accompanied by a letter of transmittal from Pickrell, dated Sept. 2, 1961.
Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1874. When Heffner was 10 years old he and his family moved to California in 1884. As young man he worked as a bookkeeper at the First National Bank in Los Angeles, California. After the bank closed in 1893, Heffner asked one of the banks customer's, Walter Vail (owner of the Empire Ranch) if he had any work for him. Thus began his career in the cattle business. Heffner served as the manger of the Vail and Gates Empire Ranch, Pima County, Ariz. from 1893 to 1905. Heffner was one of the founding members of the Arizona Cattle Growers' Association and served as it's first secretary.
