Main and Weaver Science-Engineering Libraries remain open during construction
We’re open during construction!
It has been a busy summer at UA Libraries. If you've visited us, you've probably noticed our exciting progress on Student Success District renovations. This project will transform the Main Library, Albert B. Weaver Science-Engineering Library, Bear Down Gym, and a new four-story student success building into an interconnected district that will support collaborative, hands-on learning with deep technological engagement.
During renovations, we're maintaining our regular library hours. While all of our services will continue to be available, technology borrowing, 3D printing, public computers and computer cards for visitors have been temporarily relocated to the Weaver Science-Engineering Library. Special Collections and Starbucks remain open as well.
CATalyst Studios at Main Library
East of the Main Library lobby—where the newspapers and journals were once located—significant work continues on CATalyst Studios, a new iteration of the iSpace which used to be in the Weaver Science-Engineering Library. CATalyst Studios will house the Maker Studio, the Terry Seligman Virtual Reality Studio and the Data Studio.
West of the lobby, floor demolition is beginning for a new staircase that connects the second floor to the first floor. Imagine a staircase design that also provides seating for up to 90 people, power to charge your devices and space where you can see a presentation. We're also building outdoor study areas with power outlets, a patio for Scholar's Corner and a new entrance connecting to Bear Down Gym.
When first floor renovations are completed, students, faculty and staff will be able to conveniently access technology services from both the Libraries and University Information Technology Services (UITS). As a part of our technology lending program, we are introducing a new service where students can try out new devices and learn how to use them. We've also partnered with UITS to house their 24/7 computer support service. Their Multi-Media Zone, offering a variety of advanced software, will also remain on the first floor. Until the fall, first floor computers and room 112 can only be accessed by going outside and downstairs to the Integrated Learning Center.
Meanwhile, fencing has been installed around the Main Library entrance, which will be remodeled as well. A temporary entrance is now located just west of the current entrance.
Changes at Weaver Science-Engineering Library
At the Weaver Science-Engineering Library, excavation and preparation are underway for the future east entrance which connects to Bear Down Gym. The exterior brick wall on the east side of the library will be replaced with a glass entrance that brings in the natural light that students asked for. Temporary walls have also been installed on the first floor.
Student Success District renovations began in January 2019, and library renovations are scheduled to be completed in mid-2020. Visit our library renovations page for the latest news and keep up with us on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
