Global Health Research Day event highlighted the importance of collaboration
To celebrate the inaugural Global Health Research Day on September 5, the University Libraries' Health Sciences Library and the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson Office of Global & Border Health welcomed an audience of nearly 50 medical students, residents, faculty, and staff to hear Pima County Health Director Theresa Cullen, MD, MS share lessons learned from her experiences in Sierra Leone during the Ebola pandemic in 2014-2016 and during the COVID pandemic in Pima County.
The event also included the opening of a scholarly poster exhibit showcasing the work and research achievements of leaders and learners in global health.
Dr. Cullen, who was named the College of Medicine – Tucson 2021 Alumni of the Year, highlighted the impact COVID had in Pima County, translating what health professionals are seeing domestically and globally.
“We really have to work together,” said Dr. Cullen.
“We need collaboration. We need a commitment from the global community–not just the domestic community–to make sure that we’re ready for the next time.”
The Health Sciences Library Interim Director Annbelle Nuñez said that establishing relationships with the clients who use the library is important and leads to collaborative work.
“Libraries always have that history of community,” said Nuñez after Dr. Cullen’s talk.
“When you build community with the constituents that you serve–for example, opening the space for an event like this–that really puts the value of the library on the forefront.”
