Family & Community Archives Day

Gather your family photographs, postcards, letters, certificates, brochures and programs that tell stories about Tucson and the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands for our free family-friendly event! Bring up to ten items (maximum size: 11” x 17”), and we will scan them for free. You can also contribute to the public record of our community by giving University Libraries permission to share the scans of your original documents in an online archive. Participants keep the originals, get a USB drive with digital copies of your items, and take home a Family Archives Kit—first come, first served—to help care for your historical materials. Assistant Professor Anita Huizar-Hernández, UA Department of Spanish and Portuguese, will talk about the importance of family photographs and documents for teaching and research, and a video interview with Professor Lydia Otero, UA Department of Mexican American Studies, highlights the importance of oral histories in building community history. Visit and talk with representatives from participating local community archives: Jamie A. Lee, Arizona Queer Archives; Betty Villegas, the Mexican American Museum at the Sosa Carrillo House; and Barbara Lewis and Debi Chess Mabie, the Dunbar Pavilion: An African American Arts & Culture Center.
