By instructing us about how to play chess, dice and backgammon, the famous Spanish King Alfonso X commissioned not only one of the most beautiful and impressive medieval manuscripts, he also shared deep insight into the ways to acquire wisdom and understand the vagaries of human life.

Join us for the lecture, Chess and Wisdom in a Thirteenth-Century Spanish Manuscript for King Alfonso el Sabio (Libros del ajedrez, dados y tablas), as University of Arizona scholars explore rare books held by Special Collections in this annual lecture series started by Dr. Albrecht Classen, University Distinguished Professor of German Studies.
