Open Access Lightning Talks

Celebrate Open Access Week with the Center for Creative Photography, UA Museum of Art and UA Libraries. This event is a series of lightning talks in the areas of art and architecture. Learn about using and publishing open access resources (OA), how to differentiate OA documents from copyrighted material and examples of open projects furthering research and access on the UA campus. 

  • Joey Iuliano, Instructor, Sustainable Built Environments (SBE) and College of Architecture, Planning & Landscape Architecture (CAPLA)
    Joey is a graduate from CAPLA's Planning program (MS '15) and is currently pursuing a PhD in Geography. His talk will explain what the SBE capstone is, why they decided to share/store capstone projects and the benefits they’ve seen from having their work stored there.
  • Rachel Castro, Assistant Librarian, UA Libraries
    Rachel is the liaison librarian for the College of Fine Arts and College of Architecture, Planning & Landscape Architecture. Her talk will define Creative Common (CC) licenses, explain the benefit of using CC licenses and highlight existing CC resources.
  • Kristen Schmidt, Museum Registrar, UA Museum of Art
    Kristen will discuss how the UA Museum of Art makes their collections accessible to students, researchers and the public, including a case study of a request for reproduction permission.
  • Stacie Widdifield, Professor of Art History
    Stacie will discuss creating a Wikipedia entry using a work from the UA Museum of Art’s collection, developed by her students in her Topics Class on Digital Art History.
  • Deidre A. Thompson, Access Services and Collections Librarian, Center for Creative Photography
    Deidre will provide an overview of fair use, what it is and how artists and art historians can navigate it.
  • Emily Una Weirich, Associate Archivist for Digital Initiatives, Center for Creative Photography
    Emily will offer attendees suggestions on where to find open access art resources, including images and datasets.
  • Molly Kalkstein, PhD student, Art History
    Molly will give an overview of the open access editions of out-of-print journals, which she created as an Ansel Adams Intern at the Center for Creative Photography.
